# 17 Summary

Well, I'm finally done. Even though I was familiar with many of these "tools", I tried to use all of the suggestions presented in each activity and did learn a lot. I'm just not sure, professionally what I'd use some of these tools for. I do believe that it is very smart to be aware and even familiar with some of these "tools" I'm just not sure how useful they'd be. And I am thankful for the opportunity to become familiar with these tools during work time. Bring on the raffles.

#15 Google Docs: The End of Microsoft Office?

The end of Microsoft office? Could be...although I think more likely that Microsoft Office will be fazed out. Not sure if people will want to re-learn a whole new program. The cost may be an incentive though -- free. I think that once generations begin to use google docs rather than office -- that's when office will be a thing of the past.

#14 What's a Wiki?

I see wiki's being useful as long as someone is monitoring the content added to make sure it is accurate.

Not really sure how a wiki can help patrons and/or staff in libraries. Maybe a wiki for frequently asked questions or local history??

#13 Finding new feeds

I already subscribe to google reader and I usually find my feeds through websites that I view and like already.

I did try using some of the feed search tools -- technorati and syndic8 -- not so useful to me -- lost interest immediately. I find it so much easier to just search the web, come across something I like and look for the big orange RSS button and click on it.

#12 Discovering feeds on our catalog and website

As I was searching the feeds through our catalog, I was able to view everything on alpha 2 (public), but when searching the feeds through alpha 1 (staff) the staff feeds do not work. When you click on them they do nothing. The library news, local feeds, and public feeds seem to work fine.

As far as patrons -- I feel that some will get it, others will not. If the feeds were working correctly it could benefit the staff by having the resources readily available to us as we're searching for other sources, such as books.

#11 What are RSS feed readers?

Hmmmm...let's see...I learned that the best band in the world...in Andrea's world anyway...will be playing in Central Park tomorrow May 22nd to kick off Good Morning America's summer concert series. We'll be in the Bronx anyway, I don't see why we can't just swing by and see the FREE concert...come on Chris!

#9 Explore Flickr

I couldn't decide which picture to put in my post...so here's two! Enjoy!






One of the negatives of Flickr -- according to the book of Andrea -- is the editing program, Picnik. It's not bad, but doesn't reduce red eye for the littler eyes and requires a premium service to do the cooler functions. But if you're just fixing basic things, it's ok.

#8 - Find a video on YouTube

YouTube is an amazing site. I can see library's using YouTube to post current programs they are offering and maybe tours of the library.

As to why I chose the video I did...I think it speaks for itself. Amazing!
